Pandemic-time pets increasingly end up in shelters / Article

More than 80 dogs and more than a hundred cats are waiting for a home at the shelter of the association for the protection of animals Paw in paw. Gundega Bidere, the head of the association, says that before the pandemic, pet owners were more responsible. Now the education of society must now start from scratch:

“If we remember the start of the pandemic, there was a huge demand in all the shelters that people wanted a dog, a cat in the house because there was nothing to do. [..] Right now, as people’s lives have more or less returned to normal, we are starting to feel the effects: many young animals are entering the shelter. In the past 3, 4 and 5 year old dogs were found in the shelter, now it is 7 to 8 months and up to 1.5 years old. “

Shelters, understanding what the potential consequences would be, have increased the costs of adopting animals. the Paw in paw adoption agreement added a point of a € 1,000 penalty if a person does not properly care for the animal. However, not all animals can be protected – one by one, young animals, puppies and kittens, are thrown onto the streets.

Gundega Bidere said: “The animal was interesting when he was small, while the children could play with him, while everything was kind and gentle, but the dog is growing and starting to demand attention. Of course, many of the people who took in these animals did not have the time to train them. As a result, the animals are not socialized, some are even aggressive. We understand that there has been an era of “toys”, unfortunately just in live format. “

In addition, at a time when vaccination is one of the main points of controversy in the country, pet owners have suddenly started to refuse the injections necessary for the health of dogs and cats, observed Bidere.

“As we know, domestic dogs also enter shelters, where the dog has often fled. The owner sees the dog on social media, that the animal is at the shelter, calls us, and says hello, I am the owner of this animal. And we are regularly faced with the problem that the dog has not been vaccinated against rabies. [..] When the owner is told that the dog cannot be returned until it has been vaccinated against rabies and registered in the Latvian data center …

“Then there’s that feeling when someone hears the word ‘vaccination’, it’s like red cloth for a bull. The owner of the animal is not ready to vaccinate the dog. The fact that you tell him that it is mandatory to be vaccinated against rabies in the country, if an animal becomes ill can also be transmitted to a person, and the lethality is 100% … Then the question arises to know how much we are willing to do for our animal and how we position it against ourselves.
