National Dog Day History:
According to various scientific sources dogs and humans have been living together since atleadt 14,000 years and over the time this bond has only grown as more and more people are losing and adopting dogs now than ever before.
We can find many accounts throughout history which portrayed the dogs as man’s companion and friend so the tradition of having a dog as pet is actually very old. However this has been more promoted in the modern times as we can see that during the Renaissance period of Italy during the 1500s the dogs were portrayed as friends and companions in the paintings and drawings.
Soon having dogs as pets and friends became a worldwide trend and everyone started doing it because of all the promotion towards it. Well earlier also people used to have dogs but this thing grew in popularity in the modern human history. Then on 17th September, 1884 the world’s largest and oldest non-profit all breed registry was founded and it was called the American Kennel Club. And this organization worked towards creating awareness in adoption and taking care of various animals like dogs, cats and other domesticated animals.
Regarding the National Dog Day it was created in 2004 by Colleen Paige, a Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Advocate. She created this day do that all dogs around the world can be appreciated and also to draw attention of the people about the number of dogs who are currently living in shelters and many more stray dogs do it meant to encourage people in adopting these dogs who are yet to find a home.
The date of 26th, August is also very personal to Colleen Paige as this was the day when her family adopted her Sheltie, a female dog when she was 10 years old for her.
Since its first celebrations in 2004 the festival has now grown to a larger extent and it is now celebrated across the world. In 2013 the holiday was also written into New York’s legislation and can be seen on the New York’s State Senate’s website now.
National Dog Day Significance:
The creation of a National Dog Day was very significant as there was huge demand back then to have a day for these incredible animals. As a way to aware people regarding the plight faced by the homeless and stray dogs who has no one to give love and care and also to remind that huge numbers of dogs are still waiting for their home at various animal shelters as well.
Today there are about 80 million pet dogs in the country. According to reports about 3.3 million dogs enters US animal shelters each year but out of them only 1.6 million of the dogs are adopted each year so still a lots of dogs remains homeless. Although since the introduction of the National Dog Day we have seen a commendable improvement in dogs adoption but still is not enough for all the dogs.
As of now about 44% of US households own dogs so still there is a lot of scope left in dogs adoption. Well we also aware of the fact that not everyone loves or wants to adopt dogs but those who does and can adopt then they definitely should adopt dogs and it would be nice if they adopt it from shelter homes or streets to give it a home and love and care for them as they deserve it too.
And we can ask for it as recent surveys shows that Americans really love dogs but still not everyone owns a dog. As of the survey California is the most dog loving state in the country with 88% of people saying that they love dogs and on the other hand Nebraska is the least dog loving state but still a large number of people about 48% says that they love dogs.
The day motivates is also to create an awareness to the general public about the difficulties faced by stray dogs, organizations are doing their best to create shelter homes for these lovely animals but it would require people’s contribution too in order to gives these dogs their home and love which they deserve.
