It’s that day of the year when the aroma of plum cakes takes over. That aside, Christmas also brings a great opportunity for someone to spend some much-needed quality time with their family, and that’s exactly what these prominent Delhi-NCR figures are planning to do. From family picnics to festive brunches and shopping sprees, they share what awaits them.
Gorging on baked goodies
She doesn’t cook much at Christmas, but Bharatanatyam dancer Geeta Chandran’s house is always filled with delicious, festive treats this time of year. “Even though I don’t bake, our pantry is full of cakes baked by friends at home. In fact, in August itself, Rajiv (Chandran, husband) reminds them to soak the fruits in rum! Plus, great cakes are available and can be ordered online, and they’re downright delicious, ”she says.
A family celebration
Christmas, for author Kevin Missal, is about following family traditions. He said, “We go to church in the morning in Green Park. Then there is a family lunch organized at a restaurant in Old Delhi, where we have Mughlai food. It is a tradition that was initiated by my grandparents. On top of that, we bake cakes and share with each other. We also compete with each other to see who is the best. Also, every Christmas, I buy myself a book in a bookstore in front of the church
Prayers for peace, goodness
For sarod virtuoso Ayaan Ali Bangash, Christmas is a time to hope and pray for happier times. “Christmas is always about my children, Zohaan and Abeer. Hope Santa will bless them because they have been good all year with the online courses! Neema (wife) always makes this special to them… I pray that the planet will heal soon, and I also hope that peace and unity will prevail all over the world, ”he said.
A picnic to enjoy the winter sun
Christmas is always doubly special for artist Purvai Rai, because it is also her birthday. Speaking about her plans, she shares, “We do a mix of celebrations, birthday and Christmas. We always have a Christmas theme for the party, which we do on my farm in Gurugram. We spend time there with family and friends. This year, we have fewer people joining us, due to the current Covid-19 situation. As a tradition, in addition to the usual Christmas cake, we also have a New York cheesecake. ”
