Humane Society of Summit County has urgent need for fosters

TWINSBURG, Ohio – The Humane Society of Summit County is looking for foster families who can open up their homes and give homeless animals care and compassion as they start new lives with help from the ‘agency.

“All they need is basically a place to land for a little while, you know, take them through a period of time. Then they go back to the shelter and they will find a loving home,” said Kathy Kraft, a longtime cat and kitten nanny for the CSSS. “And what you did was keep them safe and make them a more social creature.”

  • The need for foster families is great, after more than 50 animals have recently become wards of the Humane Society of Summit County
  • The humanitarian company provides training and everything a caregiver needs, including food, kitty litter, bedding, crates and veterinary care
  • Foster families who can take care of the litters of newborn kittens are always in great demand.
  • Foster care can also be a way to find out if adopting a pet is right for you.

The need for foster families is currently great, the agency said.

More than 50 animals have recently become wards of the humanitarian society after being removed from a condemned house in November. Akron City Court awarded cats, dogs and birds, which are being treated for malnutrition and various health problems, to the agency, HSSC said.

To make life easier for host families, the humanitarian company is providing everything a caregiver needs, Kraft said. This includes food, kitty litter, bedding, crates, and veterinary care. The agency also trains childminders.

“It sounds a bit too cliché, but how could you not do it?” When you have a little kitten in need, or those needy kittens, ”she said.

Kraft began walking dogs for the agency in 2008 because it mistakenly believed it could bring home illness to its resident cats, she said.

Since learning that’s not true, Kraft, who works full time, has amassed 13,000 volunteer hours and raised countless cats and kittens, she said.

“I’ve had up to three sets of kittens at a time,” she said.

Kraft has a dedicated room where she keeps her loads separate from her three resident cats. To separate multiple litters in the cat room, she uses large dog crates, also provided by the agency, she said.

Foster families who can care for litters of newborn kittens are always in high demand due to the time spent and lack of sleep associated with bottle-feeding, Kraft said, but that’s only for a short period of time.

Due to her work schedule, Kraft said she did not choose to favor bottle-fed kittens, but favored her share of mother-cats who gave birth on the same day, which is a eight week engagement.

Kraft is also a dedicated adoption counselor. To those who fear keeping animals if they tried to place them in foster care, she has a logical answer.

“As a foster mom, there’s a certain period of time that you look at them and see how independent they are and just say, ‘You’re done,’ you know? “My job is done,” she said. “Now please go, you have to find your perfect home. »Yes, I would like to keep them all. It is simply not responsible.

Fostering can also be a way to find out if adopting an animal is right for you, if you are considering making an animal a permanent member of the family, said Matt Pozderac, who recently started taking in dogs. for the agency.

“I think everyone should at least think about it. If you love animals, and if you’re going to have a dog for yourself or a cat for yourself, you can kind of test it out and give an animal a home for a little while ”, did he declare. . “If it works well then it works, and if it doesn’t, okay, but maybe you can keep cheering.”

Pozderac welcomes Bella, a six-month-old golden retriever who now shares space with Pozderac and his girlfriend, Lauren, as well as four resident cats and a border collie mix named Killian.

“We were lucky because it’s perfect,” he said, even if it wasn’t the humanitarian company would work with the host family to make it right.

The humanitarian company is conducting animal behavior assessments to better understand the animal’s temperament and any quirks the animal might have, he said.

“So they know their animals very well. They are just super overbooked, ”he said.

Getting people into foster care will reduce stress on the staff of the humanitarian company and ensure the animals receive the best care, he said.

The couple don’t know how long Bella will be with them, he said. But they’re sure they won’t become a “failing foster family,” which is an industry term for those who keep the pets they feed. That’s because several of their friends are planning to apply to adopt Bella when she’s ready, he said.

Foster care has many advantages, he said, but one is the most important.

“Think about the quality of life you give to this animal. If I didn’t feed her, she would be in a kennel. Maybe she would take a few walks a day, ”he said. “She couldn’t have played with our dog, or our cats, or really people, other than these two walks. And so, the most important thing for me is the quality of life that I can offer him. “

The only downside is that the puppies are hard work, he said.

“It might be easier with an older cat or dog, but most people know puppies are work and that’s very true,” he said. “I hardly lose sight of her, because I don’t know what she’s going to get into in our house. It is therefore almost always supervised and therefore it can be a lot of work. But it is definitely worth it for the quality of life we offer it.
