Dog owners in the UK have reported hundreds of cases of their beloved pets suffering from severe vomiting and diarrhea after enjoying a walk on the beach.

Researchers from the University of Liverpool suggest that a mysterious ‘outbreak’ which has caused unpleasant symptoms in hundreds of UK dogs could have been a strain of coronavirus.

At first, the suspicion fell on the possible pollution of sea water on the beaches which could be the cause of the acute gastrointestinal affection (GI). Symptoms included vomiting and diarrhoea, and at least one dog, described by the Daily Mail as a ‘fit and strong’ Great Dane, died of what is suspected to be a lung infection after stepping on Hayling Island beach near Portsmouth, Hampshire.
The University of Liverpool Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network (SAVSNET) within the University of Liverpool said a similar outbreak targeting dogs was spotted across the country from January to May 2020. was when the coronavirus epidemic had begun to rage, and the so-called canine enteric coronavirus variant was identified.

Now, according to the researchers, the case could be similar.

“The 2022 GI outbreak was associated with a canine enteric coronavirus variant. Using data from participating laboratories, we again find seasonality in CECoV diagnosis that appears to broadly follow that of GI seasonality, with the proportion of submitted samples testing positive being highest in winter,” SAVSNET said in its report.

However, scientists have warned that “other pathogens could be involved” in the illness affecting British pets, noting that more case data is needed to be sure.

Regardless of the disease pattern, the researchers added, it is important that owners who have detected the aforementioned symptoms in their dogs “keep him away from other dogs (isolate) at least while he is sick. and preferably a few more days just in case. it’s contagious.”

In case of doubt concerning the health of a pet, it is necessary to contact its veterinarian immediately, recalls SAVSNET.
