ANDRE Abraham, Managing Director of FireOne Fireworks, called on people to be alert to pets and the elderly when using fireworks in the days leading up to New Year’s Day.

He made the call as hundreds of people bought fireworks at the company’s annual Boxing Day sale on Sunday.

“We all need to be our brother’s keeper, be considerate and look out for one another, especially in the past two years of the pandemic,” Abraham said.

He advised customers not to use the products indiscriminately and only between 6 p.m. and midnight on New Year’s Eve.

“Once you look up at the stroke of midnight and see everyone coming together in a vision of positivity, we ask customers; please stop using the product after midnight – 12:30 p.m. at the latest.

Customers at the sale said that it is possible for firework enthusiasts and people who are generally disturbed by fireworks – pet owners and the elderly – to coexist if all are considerate.

Sherwin Bowman, a resident of Arima, said if people kept to the suggested time all parties could still celebrate.

“In our village, we are working together and making sure that the pets are tidy, so that they are not badly affected,” Bowman said.

He said people look forward to the fireworks in his area as a way to get together one last time every year.

“You can celebrate and free yourself in ways that you haven’t been able to during the year, especially during covid19,” he added. “The kids who haven’t been able to go out during the year are also looking forward to it.”

Patrick Santokee of Sangre Grande said he has been involved in the sale for over 20 years.

“I always come with my family. We have been coming since they were located in San Juan. Every year it is a tradition for our neighborhood that we prepare the fireworks for New Years Eve and set them off, and the neighbors will come and watch the fireworks and pyrotechnics.

“The neighbors are always looking forward to it and my children are looking forward to it. “

He also said that residents of his village limit their use just after midnight on New Years Day.

Abraham said sales were “exceptional” as hundreds of people visited the store from the time it opened at 9 a.m.

He said attendance was proof that people had accepted covid19 as part of their lives but still wanted to have some form of celebration.

“People want to look up, feel happy and spend time with their family and loved ones, and they want a product that unites and brings communities together. Fireworks are exactly that type of product where a son, daughter, loved ones, and neighbors can come together and celebrate all the blessings and be grateful for all they have.

Deputy Fire Chief Marlon Smith said the fire departments continued to be vigilant in advising people on the use of fireworks. He said that during the holiday season, firefighters routinely advise users of fireworks to watch out for the elderly and pets.

“We tell people this is cause for celebration and it’s another big step to be able to witness another year, but people have to let common sense prevail. In many cases, when people do not follow advice, the police must be called. “

Smith warned that people should not set off fireworks near other people, or point them at other people. He also advised against setting off fireworks in enclosed spaces or near flammable containers.

“If something is wrong, it could lead to damage – sometimes permanent, and sometimes it could lead to someone’s death.”

Asked about Abraham’s advice, he said the advice was sound and should be followed.

“Setting a specific time is also a good thing, as people in the area would have an idea of when to expect it. Keep in mind that some older people suffer from heart problems and we wouldn’t want anyone to lose their life during the celebrations. “
