7 Shockers About Mina Starsiak Hawk and Karen Laine of ‘Good Bones’

HGTV’s hit show “Good Bones” has been renewed for a seventh season (which will air in the summer of 2022), and fans are thrilled. It seems viewers just can’t get enough of Karen Laine and Mina Starsiak Falcon.

But there’s so much more to this mother-daughter remodeling team than just fixing houses: With unexpected social connections, shocking career changes, and very unusual pets, the stars of this series are full of surprises that won’t. not always go through the Show. Read on to find out how well you know the “Good Bones” family!

1. At first they thought “Good Bones” was a joke

Starsiak Hawk and Laine started their Two Chicks and a Hammer home improvement business in 2007, after (as their business website explains) “Mina bought a house that needed a lot of love. The show came about when a casting agent saw their Facebook page and started calling Starsiak Hawk. At first she thought it was a joke, but luckily the agent convinced her otherwise. This is how “Good Bones” was born, created in 2015.

2. Karen Laine previously practiced law

Despite Laine’s maneuverability around the house, designing houses was not his first career, nor will it be his last. Before getting involved in her daughter’s home improvement business, Two Chicks and a Hammer, this mom practiced law as an assistant attorney. And in 2019, she announced her retirement from the renovations to devote herself to another passion: the school of theology.

“You might think that a [law degree] would be enough, ”she joked after starting to pursue her new calling in June 2020.“ But I love school and have always wanted to preach.

3. Their family is large and “complicated”

Starsiak Hawk has six (yes, six) siblings, some of whom make regular appearances on the show, including a stepsister. Kelsy (who is the business manager of Two Chicks and a Hammer) and half-brother Then (who is deputy project manager as well as a notable member of the demolition team).

Their family tree, however, is not straightforward. The parents of Starsiak Hawk, Laine and Casey starsiak, had three children together. Then Laine had his daughter, Gray, with her second husband. Meanwhile, Casey married his second wife and had his son Then. After the death of his wife, he got married miss and had two more sons, Stephane and Johnny.

“Our family is a ridiculous, complicated, messy bunch of love,” Starsiak Hawk said in Season 1.

4. Laine built a house with her ex-husband

While she was married to Casey, as their family grew, Laine realized that they would need more space, so they built a house together.

“Casey and I had three kids together,” Laine explained in Season 1. “After all the kids were born, we started building this house because we needed more space. But then we did. decided we had to get a divorce! Finally, when the divorce was pronounced, he moved into this house and I moved in. So this is the house where Mina grew up part of the time.

In fact, in Season 1 of “Good Bones,” Laine and Starsiak Hawk even remodeled this house, proving that these ex-spouses are still as friendly as they can get.

Starsiak Hawk met her husband, Steve falcon, through a friend and they got married in 2016. Now the happy couple have two children, 3 years old Jack and 1 year Charlotte.

To make things even sweeter, Starsiak Hawk combined his love for his family and his business by designing and building their home.

In “Good Bones” Season 4, Starsiak Hawk and Laine gave the new build a Charleston-style exterior, with elegant columns, a blue ceiling on the balcony, and a black metal fence with a hawk on the door, which is appropriate given their last name.

“No one else has their last name on their door in the form of an animal,” Starsiak Hawk said of the custom feature.

6. Laine’s house has been broken into three times

While Laine and Starsiak Hawk love living in Indianapolis, it seems their community isn’t as perfect as it looks in “Good Bones.” Laine’s house has been broken into three times, the third time during her daughter Gray’s wedding.

“Burglars are a problem in our neighborhood,” Laine told local news channel Fox 59. Yet she doesn’t want to move and, given her background as a prosecutor, her house is “probably not. not the house you want to break into because I was immediately on the case, ”she said.

7. Their favorite pet is Braveheart the chicken.

Given that their business is called Two Chicks and a Hammer, it seems fitting that Laine has his own chickens and a bang. These feathered friends have appeared on Laine’s social media and even made appearances on “Good Bones,” specifically a hen named Braveheart.

“I used to take my Miniature Poodle everywhere with me. Now I’m taking Braveheart, ”Laine explained on Twitter.
