3 Key Benefits Of The Procedures

February is Sterilization Awareness Month. Although some pet owners may be hesitant to have their pets undergo these procedures, they actually have benefits for their pets and the community.

Castration and castration are both surgical procedures in which the reproductive organs of pets are removed. During spaying, the veterinarian removes the female animal’s ovaries and sometimes also the uterus, while a male animal’s testicles are removed during spaying.

Although the procedures may seem rather harsh, they actually have health benefits for pets as well as the animal population as a whole. Let’s take a look at some of them during Sterilization Awareness Month.

Pets can be healthier

Spaying and neutering can improve pet health because it eliminates the risk of developing diseases resulting from breeding, Humane Society International (HSI) Noted. For example, it can help prevent mammary tumors in females and testicular cancer in males, said Professor Andrea Peda, DVM of the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM), noted.

Neutering or neutering at an early age has also been shown to allow pets to live even longer. According to the HSI, sterilized dogs can potentially live an average of one to three years longer, while sterilized cats can increase their life expectancy by three to five more years.

It helps to control their population, reduce animal suffering

As a means of birth control, neutering helps control populations of homeless animals, preventing more animals from experiencing harsh conditions and suffering from disease or neglect.

In the United States, about 70 million homeless cats and dogs are struggling to survive, according to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Noted. Moreover, of the more than six million cats and dogs that end up in animal shelters, about half of them are euthanized if there are not enough homes for them. Euthanasia rates have even been found to increase “exponentially” in places where there are no readily available spaying/sterilization programs, the HSI noted.

“Neutering pets prevents them from contributing to the problem of homeless or abandoned dogs and cats,” HSI noted, adding that human-dog interaction improves when dogs have been vaccinated and neutered.

It helps to improve the behavior of pets

Because animals’ sex hormones influence their behavior, neutering can reduce or possibly even eliminate some hormone-related behaviors, RUSVM noted. For example, females would no longer come into heat where they would end up meowing loudly and urinating in various places while finding a mate.

In the case of males, they may be less likely to wander away from home, mark territory, or display “internal hormone-related aggression.” It could also mean saving the costs of caring for pets when they end up hurting themselves while wandering or fighting, HMI noted.

And while some pet owners may think neutering can reduce their dogs’ tendency to protect themselves, HSI noted that it’s actually part of dogs’ natural instincts to protect home and family. They may even be more protective as they are no longer distracted by the need to find a mate. RUSVM noted that aggressive behavior should also not be confused with protective behavior.

How to Observe Sterilization Awareness Month

In February, people can observe Sterilization and Sterilization Awareness Month by learning about the procedures and perhaps learning more about the truths behind some of the myths surrounding them. For example, some people may think that neutering or neutering will make pets fat, but the truth is that lack of exercise and giving them too much food are the factors that actually contribute to weight gain in pets. company.

Pet owners can also take this opportunity to have their pets neutered, or even just talk to their veterinarian about the option. Others can help spread the word, for example via social media, or perhaps contribute to the cause by helping to raise funds for shelters that sterilize animals or even just to help another pet owner cover the cost of the procedure.
